The main difference between RPET and PET

Apr 30, 2025

The main difference between RPET and PET is the source of raw materials and environmental impact, which is analyzed as follows:

1. Differences in raw material sources

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) : a primary material directly extracted from petroleum, which is a traditional petroleum-based plastic.

• RPET (Recycled PET) : a new type of environmentally friendly material made by recycling waste PET products (such as mineral water bottles, food packaging, etc.) through re-granulation, drawing and fiber processing.

2. Environmental comparison

• Resource consumption: The RPET production process can reduce oil dependence, saving 6 tons of oil per ton of finished yarn.

• Carbon emissions: Recycling a 600ml plastic bottle reduces carbon emissions by about 25.2g and saves water and oil resources.

• Certification system: RPET has passed the international GRS recycling Standard, the European Oeko-Tex Standard 100 ecological certification and other authoritative environmental certification.

3. Physical characteristics and uses

• Common ground: Both are light, durable, and highly transparent, and RPET retains textile qualities similar to PET.

• Application scenario: RPET is widely used in the manufacture of environmental protection textiles such as RPET fabric, coke bottle environmental protection cloth, covering Oxford cloth, chiffon, polar fleeces and other forms.

4. Limitation dispute

• Microplastic issues: RPET clothing can still release microplastics when cleaned, and because the blend material is difficult to fully recycle, it can lead to de-recycling or landfill.

• Green controversy: Some brands may use RPET for "greenwashing" without significantly reducing plastic pollution.

In summary, RPET is the recycling form of PET, the core advantage is to reduce resource consumption and carbon emissions, but it needs to combine the use habit and recycling system to maximize the environmental value.
